Verbal Reasoning and English for the 11 Plus exam. What is it about?

Verbal reasoning is not covered by the Key Stage 2 curriculum and requires a good vocabulary to solve problems quickly and accurately. Verbal Reasoning tests reading, understanding and reasoning using words and logic to solve problems.

Verbal Reasoning requires:

• Excellent and wide vocabulary
• Strong maths skills
• Ability to work quickly and accurately
• A good understanding of grammar

Note: there are significant differences between CEM and GL Verbal reasoning tests. However, both tests rely heavily on a very strong vocabulary.

A typical Verbal Reasoning CEM test could contain:

• English Comprehensions texts with multiple-choice questions
• Vocabulary testing using synonyms and opposites
• Strong spelling
• Missing letters questions
• Shuffled sentence (putting the words back in the correct order).
• Homonyms (choosing the right word from options e.g. to, too, two)

 A typical GL Verbal Reasoning contains a mix of different Verbal Reasoning question types:

• Vocabulary testing using synonyms and opposites
• Numbers and letters sequences
• Codes
• Logic
• Strong spelling
• Sorting letters…

Vocabulary is the single most important factor defining success in the 11 Plus exam. Vocabulary breadth will separate those who are successful from those who are not. Building this breadth takes a great deal of time to develop properly.
